Tape Saves the Earth.

Tape storage can reduce 90% of energy consumption compared to disk storage.

Comparing with Tape Storage and Disk Storage

The effect of using tape storage on CO2 reduction

Year by year, global warming is considered as a serious problem and it is a common issue throughout the world.

It is superior in terms of cost and power consumption per storage capacity, although tape storage is inferior to online storage such as disk storage at the point of access performance. Especially, tape media do not need to be supplied with power while storing data. In other words, tape storage takes less cost and is more eco-friendly than disk storage.

Data can be categorized into two types. One is data frequently accessed for analyzing or editing. The other is data mostly non-accessed but waiting new utilization and reuse in the society of AI or IoT. If all these data is stored in only disk storage, it costs much and needs large power consumption.

However, it is possible to reduce cost of power consumption or CO2 emission by using different storages depending on data usage frequency. For example, disk storage can store frequently used data and less accessed data can be moved to tape storage from disk storage.

By using both storage separately, we can reduce the total cost of storage and contribute to the prevention of global warming.
